The VI EU-LAC Summit of Heads of State and Government took place in Madrid,Spain on 18 May 2010. In its margins, a series of bilateral mini-Summits were held with specific LAC countries and sub-regions:

• EU – Andean Community (CAN) 19/05/2010
• Central America Summit 19/05/2010
• CARIFORUM 17/05/2010
• EU-Chile Summit 17/05/2010
• EU-Mexico Summit 16/05/2010
• EU- Mercosur 17/05/2010

Preceding the Summit, EU-LAC Foreign Ministers met on 17 May.

Several preparatory events – some of them co-financed by the Commission – were organised prior to the Summit.

The central theme of the Summit was:

“Towards a new phase of the bi-regional association: innovation and technology for sustainable development and social inclusion”.

The European Commission’s contribution to the Summit was primarily based on the 2009 Commission Communication on Latin America, “The European Union and Latin America: Global Players in Partnership”.
